"NEWYORK (MarketWatch) -- Malaysia's consumer price inflation soared to a26-year high in June, official data showed Wednesday, heighteningexpectations that the central bank will hike interest rates at itsmeeting later this week. The consumer price index rose by 3.9% month-on-month in June to 7.7% year-on-year, Malaysia's department of statistics reported Wednesday.In comparison, the CPI index rose by 3.8% in May. The main reason for the surge in inflation is the substantial rise inthe price of petrol and diesel announced by the Malaysian government inearly June. June's inflation surge"will likely oblige Bank Negara to raise the overnight policy rate,probably as soon as the July 25 policy meeting, after holding it steadyat 3.50% for the past two years," said analysts at Action Economics.Bank Negara is Malaysia's central bank".
